  • CONFiGURING ANKI FOR RtK

    If you want to get the most out of ‘Remembering the Kanji’ I recommend using an excellent Spaced Repetition Software program called Anki. These are the recommended settings and configuration.

    Step 1: Installation

    • Install Anki by clicking the link
    • Windows settings
      • Install ‘Japanese Language’ support
        • Start > Control Panel > Regional Settings > Languages
    • Anki settings
      • Install ‘anki-reading.exe
      • Install the ‘Japanese Support’ plugin
        • File > Download > Shared Plugin
    • Watch all the “intro videos” on the Anki homepage

    Step 2: Study Options
    In (Setting > Study Options) set:

    • Show new cards in random order
    • Spread new cards out through reviews
    • Review cards in random order
    • Show failed cards at end

    Step 3: Fonts
    In (Setting > Fonts and Colours > Fields) set:

    • Field 1: Expression > ‘When reviewing and editing’
      • Select a Japanese Unicode font

    To determine if you need a Japanese Unicode Font, go to Are My Kanji Being Displayed Correctly?

    Step 4: Backup & Online
    Register with AnkiOnline to automatically backup and access your deck from anywhere in the world. Including mobile devices such as the iPhone.

    Setting > Preferences > Network > enter your username/password

    Step 5: Custom Card Model for RtK (optional)

    1. Setting > Deck Properties > Add: “Japanese Kanji”
    2. Deck Properties > select: “Japanese Kanji” > Edit
    3. Edit > General & Fields > Add > name: “Keyword”
    4. Edit > Card Templates > Card 1 (Recognition):
      • Name
        • Recognition
      • Question:
        • %(Keyword)s
        • %(Reading)s
      • Answer
        • %(Meaning)s
        • %(Expression)s

    Step 6: How to use a Custom Model (optional)

    Field Example
    Expression: Kanji
    Meaning: Story your story
    Reading: Kanji Reading (automatically generated) {め|ぼく|ま|もく}
    Keyword: Keyword eye
    Tag: Tag(s) RtK1 Kanji

    EXAMPLE:

    Step 6: Troubleshooting

    If your deck stopped automatically generating readings for your kanji for some reason.

    • Update Anki
    • Update ‘Japanese Support’ in Anki
      • Install ‘anki-reading.exe
      • Install the ‘Japanese Support’ plugin
        • File > Download > Shared Plugin
